I had a ball hockey coach whose wife once asked him ” When are you going to get in better shape?”. His response, without hesitating was “I am a shape. I’m round. What’s better than that?”.
Like most people who want to lose weight, he felt like it was a losing battle. He had tried several diets, had started going to the gym but it didn’t work so he stopped. He figured what was the point in trying because nothing was working. Little did he know that weight loss doesn’t happen over night. For him, he was consistent with his poor eating habits and his lazy lifestyle for how many years? It was going to take consistency, healthy eating habits, and a lot of hard work to get that weight off.
Well we are in the peak of summer and it is time to get outside and enjoy ourselves. There are plenty of activities to keep you active and on track to losing the weight you want to.
Kayaking is a great way to get a workout in and enjoy the beauty Mother Nature has provided you. There are plenty of places where you can rent the gear and if you have never been before they offer lessons as well. Some spots will offer race nights, special event evenings like ladies night, or cheap date night and even guided tours with a meal at the finish.
Golf. For those that have never seen me swing a club, I have a pretty sharp slice when I am teeing off. So I usually warn everyone to stand behind me otherwise you never know where the ball will end up. But joking aside, golf is a great way to relax, enjoy the sun, good friends and get in a good amount of walking.
Here in Vancouver we have something called the Grouse Grind. For those of you who are not from here I highly suggest you give it a try when you come for a visit. It is a 2.9 km hike with an elevation increase of 2800 ft. The total amount of stairs you will be climbing is 2830 and it should take you 1-1 1/2 hours. It’s a great way to improve your cardio!
Running. If you are looking for a bit of a challenge, all you need to do is check out the Running Room’s website for a listing of different races and events in your area. They offer running groups and pre-race prep as well.
There is also water skiing, ultimate frisbee, kickboxing, water polo, diving, baseball, tennis, cycling and much more. The point is, find something you enjoy doing and get out there. It makes keeping in shape that much more fun.
Losing weight doesnt have to be a losing battle. Put in the hard work, and you will be rewarded!
